Furosemide
Furosemide is a loop diuretic (water pill). It is prescribed for excessive fluid retention and edema caused by heart failure, chronic kidney failure, cirrhosis, and nephrotic syndrome. It is also used to treat high blood pressure in combination with other medications. Furosemide is often prescribed for patients with severe hypertonia, when other water pills have no effect.
With Furosemide, kidney tubules do not absorb salt and fluid, increasing substantially the amount of urine produced by kidneys. Furosemide comes in tablets, liquid, and injection. When injected, diuretic effect occurs in 15-20 minutes and lasts 3 hours, when taking orally, the effect comes in 30 to 50 minutes and lasts up to 4 hours.
